Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 1990 H plate

My car has developed a distressing problem which I am desperate to resolve. At very irregular intervals, not correlated to engine revs or any other factor I can identify, the engine "glitches" i.e. suddenly loses power. These glitches last only a small fraction of a second, and the engine always recovers fully. Apart from this, the car is driving very well, with good power and fuel economy. All temperatures are normal, and no lights come on the dashboard at any time. I recently had the airflow meter replaced, and also the ignition amplifier, to no effect. I am afraid to drive the car over any distance now as I worry that the engine will cut out completely and not recover.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with this engine, and if so, did they ever manage to get to the cause of the problem?

I have had a similar problem, eventually it died completely after 'glitching' for a few weeks.

It was the fuel pump !

Ah! My sister said it could be that, but a garage totally disagreed. Thank you for such a speedy response, Steve. Did you get the pump replaced? What car were you driving?

Has anyone else had this problem, and did it turn out to be something else?
