Cheap windscreen for 93 Corsa

I've got a L-reg Corsa (5 door) with a reasonable amount of life left in it and, as befitting of a car of this age, Third Party Fire and Theft insurance.

Presumably exacerbated by recent cold spell, a crack has in the bottom-left corner of the windscreen (most of it is hidden behind the tax disc, so I suspect it's been there for a while), and seems to be growing - it's maybe 6 inches long at present. Clearly something needs to be done before a decent bout of frost or flying stone finishes it off catastrophically...

As I understand it, stone chips can be repaired for a modest sum, but a crack like this calls for a complete replacement of the windscreen. If I had fully comp insurance, this would be a simple case of 50 quid to Autoglass or similar and the insurance pays the rest, but with TPFT this isn't an option.

So the question is, given the value of the car and that the Book Of Lies says the job involves skill, sealant and a high risk of cockup, how much does a windscreen cost, and what's the cheapest way to get it fitted?

Presumably a local independent windscreen fitter is going to be cheaper than one of the big chains who come to you in a van? Is it worth obtaining a half-decent screen from a scrappy and finding someone to fit it?

TIA,

Kim.

a screen place will only charge about 80 quid, take it to a screen depot, tell them it is a cash job

I found that budget windscreens were cheapest, although the price varied depending on the time of day I called and I guess that was becase they were guessing at the call out and fitting charge. I'm not overly convinced just yet of the quality of their stuff. I ended up fitting the screen myself. It's a simple enough job but you'll need an airgun or similar to apply the sealant. For the price, you'd be better off getting someone to fit it.

It's probably a bonded in windscreen (just means it's glued on) so I doubt you'd be able to get a screen out of car in one piece. Your crack doesn't sound too bad and is unlikely to result in catastrophic failure.

I've found the cheapest way is to drive to the local depot and ask in person waving cash around. I've had a few for around the 50quid mark.

Tried a few places today, and got it done for 70 quid + VAT. Amazing how much better the visibility is without 12 years' worth of low-level chips and scratches.

For the archive, Bee Windscreens of Herries Road, Sheffield get my thumbs-up.

Thanks to all who replied.

Got a good deal there then, a few months ago I has one replaced, Best quite I could get for same glass was a few quid over a hundred inc vat.

In the end I got RAC Autoglass to do it for £125 as the had it in stock and came to me to do.... but I wasn't paying. (brick from a skip wagon)
