Bodywork Repair

I have very little knowledge of bodywork \ repairs so this will be my first one.

The car is a Volkswagon Bora 2001

The damage is on the front bumper. I went up an angled drive way a little too fast and did a 50 pence size bit of damage to it. it completely taken the paint off it, what I can see is a black material and at the edges of it the primer or laquer, its a whit colour.

So not wanting to go to a bodyshop to fix it as I'm feeling brave enough to have a go at it myself. If the weather cheers up soon.

So the big question is where do I begin and what in as detailed steps as possible do I do. I'm near a halfords which have a big stock of stuff I may need an they custom make paints and have touch up kits.

thanks

It will look like a dogs dinner, even moreso if you don't know the basics of painting.

Had a read of it. Going to get it done by someone with the skills.

Appreciate the links\post and if I get a minor dent again I will try and fix it like they say, but as this one is a bit tricky I'll pass.

My painting skills are limited to that of rolling a ceiling and painting by numbers.

I've not had much practice with a spray can. I know a few basic principles like holding distance. Less is more, Build it up with thin costs rub down between coats etc. But with the problem\dent I have its just under half way down on the passenger door and dont know if I could sucessfully blend the respray part with the rest of the door. I would probably need doing by a professional with an airbrush or have the whole door done in a bodyshop I think.

As someone experienced at body work, my advice is if you need to ask for tips then you will mess it up. It takes experience to do a good job of body work and even then you have bad days from time to time and have to redo the job.
