Take head off.

Valve damage is a certainty on this engine- strip the head straight away, will save time in the long run.

If it was the 8v you'd probably be lucky, but the 16v is an interference engine and common cause of knackered engines on these cars. It's critical the belt/tensioner are changed every 40k miles on the Nexia. To be honest, even in A1 condition these cars are fetching very little money now, so unless you can do the work yourself and cut out labour costs it'll probably pay you just scrap it and get another. I have a Nexia that I'll be getting rid of soon. Bodywork is tatty and high mileage (150k) but a lovely smooth drive and mechanically sound. When I bought the car the water pump sprung a leak, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise because when it was stripped down to fit a new water pump, the old cambelt was removed at the same time and it was frayed and on the point of snapping!

Thanks all for the info... I thought the head would have to come off but my mate was trying to convince me to stick a belt on it and give it a go. Good advice that Mark, but given that I only gave £80 for the car in the 1st place, its probably worth me sorting the head out myself , I'm told the car running and tested is worth around £500. I would be interested in your head Mark idf you decide to break the car?

With 150k on the clock it's starting to puff a bit of blue smoke on first start up, so you'd be best getting a low mileage unit. I'd keep an eye on Ebay as you'll probably drop on a tatty bodywork Nexia with no MOT but has a good low mileage engine for little more than £50.

My advice would be to scrap the car.
