Can this exhaust be repaired?

Anyone know if it's possible to repair the middle section of exhaust that's cracked and blowing right at the end just before it bolts onto the cat. Apart from that it is a good exhaust but last year going round a sharp bend the back section of the exhaust slipped off its rubber mountings, bounced on the rear axle and caused the middle section to crack. At the time it was a straight piece so I managed to repair that section with some exhaust putty and a bean tin (which has held well ever since) but now a new split has occurred right at the end flange where it bolts onto the cat. There doesn't look enough room to be able to get anything around it so I'm not sure if it can be repaired.

You could weld the joint if that's where it has gone but exhausts are a pain to weld as the metal is so thin you can easily punch a hole through. I've had better results with gas torches than arc welding.

If you don't have access to a welding set, or know a tame welder though I suspect most places will just try and sell you a new section.

Had a similar problem a few years back - garage (on the service area at the end of the big long bridge on the M5 past Bristol) did a "temporary" repair to get me to my destination.

The repair failed - 18 months later! - I think he used lots of welding rod and small pices of metal.

Well the damn thing has now snapped completely in half so I think that's = the end of that exhaust! With nothing more than the front pipe connected = the neighbours are going to love me tomorrow morning when I run it to an = exhaust centre:)

It could still be welded but MIG welding is likely to be easier on this thin metal than with a stick welder. But unless you have a tame welder or can do it yourself it may cost more than a new pipe.

Hmmmm & they'll tell you they can't replace that part without damaging the rest of it so you'll need a complete new exhaust I bet...

I've welded up exhaust pipes, flanges & boxes to great effect in the past. Not worth it where replacements are cheap but when it's 2 or 3 hundred pounds for a box it is!
