Corse Td cutting out

Daughter's boyfriend drove to work(30 mins) in his L reg Corsa TD, went into a shop and the car wouldn't start when he came out, he said there was only a click. They jump started the car but it keeps cutting out, he was first told it was the battery, but now he's being told it could be the alternator, but I always thought a diesel would run without this as it doesn't use a spark. Anyone got any thoughts on this as he needs the car for work.

It still needs enough power to hold the shutoff solenoid open. With a flat battery and dead alternator, even a diesel will fail to run.

Modern diesels invariably need some power, due to things like electrically operated 'stop' solenoids on the pump, plus the ECU normally having some control over various engine functions.
