Er - the bit that's split is plastic, isn't it?

Mark, did you have a car parked behind yours, pretty close that the gap allowed just one person to scrape through? The scratch has a wavy indentation along the bottom of its length, at short but regular intervals of pressure and relief. Together with the shallow dent above the scratch mark, I am inclined to think that someone was carrying some very heavy luggage, parcel, or box, and he/she was trying to force through this gap while resting the heavy load on your car bumper. It might not even be intentional. When this heavy load was dragged along in short bursts, it created this wavy excavation marking. This also explains how the dent above it came about -- a slip while holding on the hefty ?suitcase.

(This speculation doesn't help your repair one bit. :))

True it doesn't but it would put my mind at rest somewhat to know it wasn't done deliberately. My reasons for suspecting this was just based on the fact that my car has been deliberately damaged on no less than a dozen previous occasions. So it's not a huge leap to figure this was done in the same way.

You are either completely hopelessly paranoid or you need to seriously re- evaluate the way you interact with other people in real life, Mark...

I'm sorry I don't quite follow! I *know* my car has been deliberately damaged on previous occasions. Wing mirrors do not fall off on a weekly basis by accident. They don't fall off on two cars on the same street at the same time by accident. And you don't usually have people calling around your house at 11pm at night saying they've just seen someone kicking the wing mirror on your car.. He must have just been all in his imagination too.

My misunderstanding, then - I thought you meant it was personal. If it's just random, then you merely live in a shithole.

It's possible that it's personal, but I think it's extremely unlikely. It seems their "game" is to try and damage all the cars in a street in one go, mine is just the next one in line.

When talking to the police last week they told me that while it's not very common in my area it is extremely common in other parts of Gateshead.

One of the many many things I don't miss about living in London was the joyful sounds of scrotes leaving the pubs late at night kicking the wing mirrors of every car in the road. Only once did I manage to get a good enough look at 'em to allow the dibbles to pull a bunch of 'em up.
