I assume these are defined in relation to the kerb. So a left hand drive vehicle in the UK would have its nearside on the driver's side?

Depends what way the car is facing, though.
Assume the car is on the side of the road facing the direction it would normally travel.
Never make assumptions.
Where the law is concerned (mirrors, certificates, bus lanes) yes. If buying parts, maybe not.
Always make consumptions.
