Yes, they're the only way to go. Torque converters in auto boxes fitted to such applications quite simple can't cope.
As the Western Region of British Rail allegedly found out (depending on who's telling the story).
har har... doesn't the poor chap require handbooks??? and not MANUAL gearboxes......
