diesel opps

Last night I managed to inject 4 litres of green into my diesel tank before realising the error.........



I then topped it up with 46 litres of the proper stuff.....



car ran OK for 40 miles but what can I expect today.....



I just assume that small quantity will have mixed up with the diesel.


Go on, give us a clue...

Depends entirely on the car. When I used to drive regularly in The Glorious Workers Paradise I regularly used to add 15% petrol to my diesel in winter to prevent it waxing and it was never a problem.

Some newer cars are said to be intolerant of it but I would say that if you have already driven 40 miles without incident then you should be ok.

It depends entirely on the make, model and age of the vehicle. Older diesels are relatively simple affairs and you are likely to "get away with it". Newer cars with anti-pollution devices are far more prone to damage.

Oh, well that makes it easy then!

Your car either needs a new engine and fuel system, or is perfectly OK.

It's pretty obvious that article is written by somebody who knows f*ck all about engines.

To take a couple quotes -

That puts the fuel under pressure, ready for instant injection into the engine, which is why modern diesels start so quickly. The old-fashioned waiting time for preliminary ignition "warm-up" might appear to have been eliminated, but in reality it has simply been electronically absorbed into pre-driving procedures. It is a clever and convenient development but it comes at a price for the absent-minded."

So unlocking the doors now activates the fuel pump? Which generates enough pressure to get instant injection? And look, a pig just flew past the window! No fuel pump will power up, until the ignition is turned on, which on modern keyless cars could be as soon as you walk up to them, but the only pump activated is the lift pump, which could maybe manage 10bar pressure at a push, but certainly nowhere near enough for injection. Modern car diesels start so quickly, because they're direct injection (DI), not because of modern injection systems. I've got a 40year old diesel tractor outside, with no electronics, and if it doesn't start within first turn of the engine, somethings wrong with it. In fact, a modern diesel will probably take longer to start than an old DI, as modern common rail engine ECUs can't start firing injectors until the engines turned over enough for it to figure out what cylinder is next up for firing, whereas a old DI will start injecting straight away.

"Petrol wrecks diesel engine lubrication processes and is particularly damaging to a diesel engine's costly, high-pressure fuel pump, which operates at up to 2,050bar (30,000psi). Petrol removes the pump case hardening and if a film of hardened metal disintegrates into swarf it will greatly harm or even wreck an engine's internal organs."

So petrol can now break down case hardening just by contact? Yeah, and oil companies give you fuel for free! Figures are roughly right, but the rest isn't. Petrol breaks down the lubrication film, which then leads to metal on metal contact, leading to the case hardened surface of the highpressure pumping chamber breaking down. But how they think that swarf will get into the 'engine's internal organs', through injector nozzle holes which are fractions of millimeters big, I'd like to know. You could probably get more contamination through an air filter than what you would get through an injector nozzle.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Knight Of The Road" saying something like:

"During the winter, diesel is heavily dosed with paraffin, as diesel waxes at low temperatures. On returning to the U.K. this can cause problems, as the use of paraffin as road fuel is illegal in the U.K- British Customs Officers aren`t usually interested in some lorry driver`s sob-story!"

Seriously? It's my understanding that Customs wouldn't give a toss about fuel bought abroad, since they wouldn't have been in a position to collect the duty on it anyway. The use of kerosene as a road fuel is only illegal if bought in the UK and duty hasn't been paid on it. You could fill your tank with UK kerosene if you wished, as long as you nipped down to C&E and paid them beforehand and got a chitty. Wouldn't do your engine a lot of good, mind.

I think you had better do a bit of research..............this is apparently a current function on some vehicles.

Hate to tell you, but I know these systems quite well, and all high pressure pumps are mechanically driven, i.e. they need the engine to be physically turning before enough pressure for injection is created. On some vehicles, the low pressure (aka lift pump) may not need a key in the ignition to activate (i.e. modern keyless entry cars), but they produce less than 0.01% of the required pressure required for injection.
