Dirty windscreen

Despite using various stuff that claims to do the job, foam sprays and so on, I still can't completely clean the windscreen. It seems clear enough when dry, but when it is raining the area not swept by the wipers is less clear. Does anyone know of anything that really WILL properly clean screens of all residues? Thanks for any advice. John

I use cheap trigger sprays of glass cleaner, the sort that supermarkets sell.

It's great for getting squished insects off too!

I've used (in no particular order), Mr Muscle window cleaner, Jif creme cleaner (probably now called Cif), and Autoglym s glass polish. The Jif comes out if it really looks like some serious road-film removal is necessary. If this scratches your windscreen, you didn't hear about it from me ! (I worked on the unproven basis that glass is probably as hard as vitreous enamel but could be way wrong.)

I tend to use white spirit to remove the greasy film of grime, followed by Mr Muscle glass cleaner to polish it off.

I always used isopropyl alcohol - leaves your windscreen clean, clear and won't smear.

Doesn't taste good with orange juice though!

Have you made sure the smearing isn't coming from the wipers?

I use a 75/25 mixture of clean warm water and malt vinegar (the stuff you put on fish 'n chips). You could try a 50/50 mix if that isn't powerful enough.

Cuts through smears like you wouldn't believe..

Call in at an Autoglass centre (RAC nowadays) and buy some deep clean stuff. Magic. DaveK.

I use the same stuff too...

Enamel is pretty soft stuff. Have you not read the instructions on bathroom cleaning products and seen it say "not for use on enamel".

Glass is relatively hard and chemically inert but you can scratch it or remove any coatings it has if you try hard enough.

At least I erred on the right side, then. I use this sort of cleaner (Jif) when I feel the screen needs some mild abrasive, and follow it up with the glass polish (which may or may not be snake oil).

It does, actually. IPA is a butyl alcohol and has a sweet taste. BUT DON'T DRINK IT, IT WILL MAKE YOU VERY ILL !!!

Butyl? The P stands for Propyl, ie three carbons in a row. Butyl is 4. Iso means the OH is in the middle rather than the end.

CH3-CHOH-CH3

The rest of the advice is entirely sensible! (and I could say applies to the greene king version of IPA too. the beer is definitely better having moved away from cambridge :-) )

Despite my current hangover I suspect you tried the wrong drinking establishments :-)

I did try quite a few...

I did have one report of a decent pint, at the St Rhadegund, but the rest were all pretty average. And since our local beer now includes Timothy Taylors, my other assertion is going to be hard to disprove :-)

Good point :-) I do miss Landlords, although the Grapes sells it occasionally.
