Don't forget to put the clocks back before you go to bed on Saturday night!

There is absolutely no way I will forget, at least on Monday. I have 80+ of the damn things to correct at work..! I won't be getting much other work done that day..!

Fortunately all my home clocks are either permanently on GMT or automatically adjust via MSF or NTP.

Ivor

I do so hate BST, we should stick to GMT all year and be happy with it.

Its been called UT since they discovered that Greenwich isn't the exact centre of the universe after all. Posted @ 1704Z

People are always complaining that it becomes too dark when kids are on the way home from school and similar sob stories.

The number of hours of daylight doesn't magically change by altering the clocks, just get up an hour earlier and go to bed an hour earlier..! Start work/school at 8 instead of 9 or whatever, simple.

Ivor

Technically, there is a difference between UTC and GMT, but unless you're using an atomic clock it's not worth bothering with. As an ex-patriate Londoner, I tend to side with Greenwich ;-)

Ivor

What? That has got FA to do with altering the clocks. GMT (ie our winter time) is our natural timezone, if we stuck with that all year round then kids will still go to and from school in the daylight all year round. It'll just get dark an hour earlier in the summer.

The point of daylight saving time is to get an extra hour of light in the evening in the summer.

Yeah start an hour after sunrise. Start work in June at 4am, and in December at

9am.

Natural timezone? Where the f*ck did that come from? I've never seen in any encyclopedia about the British Isles (including Eire) have a 'natural timezone'.

But the hours of daylight remain the same..! The artificial device of the clock is what screws it up.

It's what people did before clocks.

Why not..?

Ivor

Greenwich..? And why is a swear word necessary to make your point..?

Ivor

Look up the definition of "noon".

In fact that's an oversimplification, the "natural" timezone of GMT would be just for the 0 degree longitude line, but it would be silly to have to put your clock back 10 mins when you travel from London to Bristol (that was actually the case a few hundred years ago - local noon really was noon!).

I agree. Funnily enough everyone I have spoken to seems to think that changing the clocks is unnecessary. Yet we still do it.

Depends where you are in the UK. Only dark for half an hour here, in June. We are ready for elevenses by 4am :-)

Yes. But nothing to do with winter. Daylight saving time is to frig things *in the summer*, not the winter, so what's the "People are always complaining that it becomes too dark when kids are on the way home from school and similar sob stories" all about?

So you sleep for 16 hours in the winter?

I don't know, but they do.

My cat does. I envy her..!

Ivor

Why is it that in every newsgroup there is at least one post about putting the clocks back?

No chance been looking forward to tonight since they went forward at the end of March but starting to dread end of March 07 already .

What they really mean is they can't kick them out of the house until bedtime to annoy other people like they can in summer Ivor .

The alternative is to have to go TO school in the dark, just like my generation did during the permanent BST (British Standard Time) experiment in the late 1960s. Believe me it's really horrible.

There was such a significant rise in child fatalities due to bad driving that the experiment was declared a failure. And there was far less traffic about in the 1960s, than today.

No amount of frigging with the clocks will change the fact that by mid-December, daylight hours are very limited.
