But how unusual to see a car radio in Liverpool...

If it's not possible to locate it somewhat using a stethoscope-type listening tool, then I suspect a big-end or main bearing has gone (causing that 'general' thump rather than a tapping from one component like a tappet).

Sounds vaguely like an holed piston....

I'd remove the exhaust manifolds and look for small blowbys in the gaskets. Sounds exactly like my Disco 300 Tdi did when the head had lost a manifold stud and the gasket leaked ... OK, so we also got a squeal, but it mostly knocked almost _exactly_ like that sounds .. ;)
