...if you want to kill the camshaft.
But you need to continue to use the correct grade, and not 20W/50 unless the manufacturer specifies it.
Why? My wifes' BMW 525 ran on 0W/30 fully synthetic at 200,000 miles.
Indeed.

Which model? That wasn't a recommended grade for older ones.
E34 with the M20 engine. Ran absolutely silent and was as clean inside as it was when new. Had been on that for all its life going on the service history.
It comes to £29.35 per 5 litre. I pay around £35 at Halfords for 5W40 fully synth with the spec API SL CF ACEA A3 B3 B4.
Halfords used to have BOGOF on on this items around New Years and Easters; that was how I started buying it. But now the closest I've seen is half price for the second bottle which is only 33% off. And that didn't happen this year. Worth shopping around though.
ISTR 10/40 was the recommended grade - and semi synthetic. My main dealer used Duckham's Hypergrade. Of course a better spec oil might well be ok - but possibly wasting money.
I remember that when she first took it to the local BMW specialist that something along those lines was mentioned but it was decided that as it had been on 0W/30 full synth all its life to continue with that as it obviously was very happy on it.
Worse - 2 for the price of 1.5 is 25% off.
But it is 33% on :) Doh!
