Escort Temp gauge

I'd guess at a failed -open- engine thermostat. You say it sometimes moves a little.

What kind of driving do you do? If it is mostly short journeys then with an open thermostat the coolant will be going at full flow for the entire journey and not really getting that hot.

You say the heater work. My '94 Scrote used to start blowing hot air after approximately 1 mile at 30mph. If yours takes longer than that then the thermostat could be open.

Run the engine an hold your hand on the outlet hose that heads back to the radiator. If it warms up fast then the thermostat.

If none of the above, then try replacing the sensor.

I am fairly certain that the sender is on the front of the block and has only one wire.

Ahhhh....errr, so what is the two wire one on the thermostat housing? and where on the engine block is the other one?

Zetec / Zetec-E engine has the dial controlled thermostat on the rear of the block.

the one on the thermo housing is the sender for the ecu. I do not know if the gauge is fed from the ecu, I think there is a standard one wire temp gauge sender on these, but have not got one convenient to look at , there may be one in later I can spy at.
