My new car's 20 years old and it's done less than 54k. You're not the previous owner are you?

Don't be silly. His mummy wouldn't let him anywhere near a 20 year old "death trap".

Siecento?
Actually, although I'd rather not crash, if I did it's be in the Siecento than in a 1984 Escort.
Or would I be?
Given the tremendous performance of the Siecento, it might be going quicker than the Escort...
Hmmm decisions...
Are you insinuating that I'd buy an 84 Escort? Do you think I worshop Iron Oxide as a god? I've bought a Volvo 340... I'd rather crash that than your Seicento rubbish :D.
If it was Peters Sechento the pistons would melt from pinking before it got to 50mph ;-p

That'd definitely apply to 84 Escorts - maybe not so much to 80/81 ones though, for some reason the really early Mk3s seemed to resist rust better. To do with the quality of metal used I think.

No, please. Feel free to crash it. One less 340 in the world is a *good* thing.
Anybody else reckon Peter's mum is an ace mechanic and she's set up the Siecento with these "problems," then? :)
lol! So why did you get a car that's probably been used as a shopping trolley? What car is it?
Volvo 340. It's been owned by an old guy for years until the previous owner bought it. The price was right, and everything seemed in order with the car mechanics wise. I won't have a nervous breakdown if the engine explodes. Unless I happen to be in the middle of Eastern Europe at the time and I've got no mobile phone coverage ;).
So it's spents it's life going to the shops being driven at no more 500rpm ;-)
And that's coming from you?????
Peter
It's kinda ironic, isn't it?
Peter (petermcmillan snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :
Apart from when parking. That'll have been done at a constant 5,000rpm with much clutch slippage.
Yep lol!
Actually, I quite happy at the moment, I just got to uni and my car seems to have been cured :-D. No pinking! Hopefully it won't come back. I think that the faulty gasket had probably let some dirt in, which was causing a few problems and it's probably taken a few hundred miles to clear it. Just an idea, but I can't think of many other explanations other than it was coked up due to the faulty gasket.
So maybe it's gonna be the end of my 'pinking' threads :-D
Peter (petermcmillan snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :
Indeed.
Shall we open a book on the next repeating thread?
Right, ladies and gents, I can do you the following odds:
2:1 - My mum's making me sell the car. 3:1 - My pinking has returned. 5:1 - I think the head gasket is going. 17:1 - My dad says the exhaust is blowing. Plus bonus accumulator - He says he can fix it. 17:2 - Could a dodgy rear shock be responsible for poor fuel consumption? 28:1 - My mum says no man can live over 25mph. 50:1 - I think my wheels are square. 150:1 - I've just done 70mph.So ladies and gents if you'll just step up to the man with the suitcase and be ready with the folding, we'll get things going...

The message from Scott M contains these words:
Wishful thinking.
Hasn't happened yet!
Yep, you guessed it! It was back when I went home. I think it's also been a bit harder to start since the gasket was changed.
I don't think so, all of my leaks have gone now.
No!
Erm, no!
No!
I never checked, I think you might be onto something there ;-)
Don't be silly!
btw, I think I did break the land speed record today, but the speedo must've been boken, it only said 40mph ;-)
