Fiat Punto ignition lock barrel

My son's girlfriend has a 97 Punto 1.2

Yesterday she had a problem where the key wouldn't turn in the ignition. A nearby garage had a quick look (free of charge bless them) and said that the part of the barrel which disengages the steering lock is nackered. A new barrel is needed.

Fiat dealer wants £450 for complete new set of locks and re-code which is almost what the car is worth. I thought about just fitting a new barrel and key but keeping the old key on the fob to keep the immobiliser happy but I suspect that the immobilser receiver is part of the ignition lock barrel.

What are her options? As its an old car, she wouldn't be bothered if the immobiliser was deactivated.

Thanks in advance.

Get the new barrel with matching key.

Carefully detach the transponder ring from around the old one and stick it to the new one with epoxy.

You will have to keep the old key on the keyring - but you'd need that anyway, as you're not replacing the door locks.

Just don't unplug any of the immobiliser bits, 'cos that'll give a CODE fault which will need a dealer re-set.

Thanks Steve. I'm hoping that the local garage or the Fiat dealer haven't already unplugged anything.

Would a dealer reset cost much and would it require a master key?

Don't *think* it needs a master key. It's only fault-clearing.

Cost for plugging into the Fiat machine is usually a hour of labour.
