Rover 214 K Series 16 Valve. I need to fit a new thermostat. Is this as much of a PITA as it looks considering it is stuck at the back under the inlet manifold?

No, it's worse than it looks. Make sure that you can get a manifold seal at short notice as you could well need one - it's much easier if the manifold comes off.
