Focus TDCi rough tick over

Focus TDCi 1.8 2004

Over the last two weeks my Focus is exhibiting rough engine running at tick over.

It takes 3 or 4 seconds of cranking in the morning before it starts. Usually it starts almost immediately. For the first 2 or 3 miles tick over is normal during stops in traffic. Then during stops in traffic tick over sounds slightly rough and different to normal. The rev counter indicates roughly the same revs during rough tick over.

Acceleration and engine power are normal. The problem is just rough tick over once warm and taking a bit longer to start. I have replaced the air filter - it didn't make any difference.

The fuel filter has not been changed since about 60k miles back.

Looking for suggestions as to possible cause / things to check.

Cheers

+1 , but get it on IDS first.

I've got much worse problems with mine, pig to start but when it goes it's fine until the glow plug light flashes and the engine stops. Normally restarts with ignition on off in gear.

What I would like to know is what sort of equipment is needed to actually view engine parameters ( like fuel pump pressure) live, as a passenger?

glow plug light flashing is often a symptom when it has a faulty injector

Probably a OBD II bluetooth adapter @ less than £10 from ebay (ELM327) and the Torque App on a smart phone (Andriod and Iphone).

Example (not a recommendation for the seller)

Yes or faulty fuel pump I'm told. My brother had two injectors replaced by a Ford dealer before he gave up, and gave me the car.

As Ford dealer cannot do better than suggest replacing the pump I thought I'd see what I could check. It may be just that they didn't code the injectors properly but I thought a live reading of the rail pressure might show if the pump were weak. In which case it's a scrapper.

Injection pump failure was common on those, dealers would not take them as part ex without proof of a recent pump ( at one time, at least)

I picked up a usb version and it reads the faults as: P1221 - Fuel Pump Secondary Circuit Low P2291 - Injector Control Pressure Too Low - Engine Cranking

live readings for the fuel pressure gave 80Bar cranking, 250 at idle and 550 at 1700rpm.

So it seems to be a goosed injector pump

I think this is terminal for a 2004 focus Ghia as the most I could expect for it is GBP1000.

I'll probably take the wheels off and scrap it after I've had a word with our local injection place.

The software that came with the connector has a live reading of some parameters but the units don't seem consistent anyone care to say what these represent?:

RPM

FRP (what's this?) Bar MAP (manifold pressure?)kPA EGRp (exhaust gas recirculation?) mm EGRd (?)% MFdes (?)mg BARO(atmospheric pressure?)mb APP1(?)V(oltage?)APP2 APP3 Batt (battery voltage) CPP (?) BPP(?) A/C (air conditioning) VSS(Speed) CHT (?temperature) FTS(?temperature) IAT(?temperature)BET(?temperature)

Is there freeware for other makes that will talk to this OBD2-usb connector other than the formidable stuff that came with it?

I have just done an injector return leak test. Used four of those 500ml sports drink bottles with the membrane cap, just push clear plastic tube in and it doesn't leak. Bottle held upside down taped to the open bonnet. In 3 minutes approx the nearside injector filled the 500ml bottle one third. The two centre injectors only filled to about one inch from the cap (bottle held upside down) The offside injector only filled about 1 and a half inches from the cap.

I have noticed one additional symptom. I was waiting for the engine to warm up and exhibit rough tick over before I did the leak test. After fifteen minutes of waiting, the engine was warm but there was no rough tick over, it was normal. I blipped the accelerator slightly, not a hard rev and from then the rough tick over was back.

Does that still sound like a bad EGR valve or a bad injector? Would a TDCi still run ok with only three cylinders working?

Thanks

I should have added there is no smoke from the exhaust.
