Ford Fiesta L reg. No starting/cutting out. Rv!

Hi all, Returning after a long break away. Hopefully you can help.

I have an L reg 1.1 Fiesta, with electronic ignition. It's having problems running on a few occasions. Usually "cutting out/struggling to run/dropping revs" at tickover. Usually when it's wet. I had a dig around today and found out it has a one piece HT coil and HT distribution unit (unknown make) feeding the plug leads directly.

I suspected dissy cap and rotor arm, hence the hour struggling with the one piece HT unit a the back of the engine, where I couldn't see it. Got the unit out and found out it's not the cap/rotor. Oh well.

So it's down to leads and plugs in my ill-informed opinion. Walking past a garage earlier I gave them the basic fault details and they siggested it was most likely the "throttle position sensor", he'd "put his life on it". He also stated the TPS is expensive.

So, from what I have here, any thoughts or ideas? I'll probably stick some leads and plugs on it if I hear nothing different?

Try giving the leads a coating of WD40. Sounds like poor insulation on them if its mainly doing it in the wet.

20quid for a tps on a old festa. Had to change one. But Id suspect the inlet manifold gasket/carb seat gasket first.

get yer watering can out, start car, n chuck water over the DIS/Leads, n carb body area..

Sounds like it's sucking air either the inlet manifold / carb gasket or a vacuum pipe broken or loose. It should run with the tps disconnected, but looses a bit of power.

A local garage got a replacement CFI unit cheaply for me and fitted it. The thing is they can't reprogram the module so it revs wierd. They never told me this! It's going back tomorrow.

Symptoms now: Starts fine, Revs "tick over" at around 900rpm when static. Revs "tick over" at around 1900rpm when slow rolling.

Car wants to drive away with the rolling tickover. Slowomg at lights, drop clutch see 1900rpm, wait +-5 seconds the revs drop to 900 once stopped, or slip the clutch in 1st to force the revs down.

Does the module learn from these mistakes or does it actually need reprogrammed, as the Haynes manual states? If it learns over time then that'll be fine, It's had about 20 miles today after the work though.

I, going to get the old CFI stripped and check it out. I might end up with some substitution work going on if the garage faffs about too much. Any ideas what part is most likely to be the cause?

This is a PITA but at least it's running for Thursday(today) as I have an important trip into the country with no bus service, at 11pm!

No reprogramming necessary, get the garage to lower the at rest TPS volts and all should be well.

The Haynes manual seems to suggest it needs the EEC4 module reprogrammed. There also appears to be adjustments available around this unit.

I'm going down to the garage in a few minutes to see the situation.

This come from the Haynes manual (1595)... "The throttle plate control motor (mounted

on the side of the CFi unit) regulates the idle

speed by reacting to the signals sent by the

EEC IV module. The signals are calculated by

the values and information provided from the

engine sensors. When the throttle position

sensor indicates that the throttle is closed, the

module enters the idle speed mode or

dashpot mode (according to engine speed).

The module maintains the idle speed at a

constant value, making minor adjustments as

necessary for different loads and conditions.

The base idle speed can only be adjusted by a

dealer or fuel injection specialist with the

necessary equipment to link up to the engine

management module.

Yes, you either use a Ford harness or make your own and earth one two or three of the four wires at the service connector to give 50, or 100rpm increase, and can retard the ignition by 3 deg using the 3rd wire earthed.

The ECU in this case really is rudimentary.
