R reg fiesta cutting out

Hi

I have a '98 R reg ford fiesta and recently it has started cutting out when I depress the clutch when slowing down, often after a few seconds of engine braking. If I notice whilst still moving and engage a gear, it bump starts and keeps going as if nothing was wrong. A friend suggested the idler might need adjusting, is this the likely cause? If so, is it the sort of thing that's relatively easy to do myself or would I be better to pay someone to have a look?

Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated
