Didn't take long to get to the bottom of it... Got the drum off the right rear which sounded like the likely candidate and had a look at the pads. They're about 2mm thick so no problem there however I suspect that it's not a particularly good thing that the top third of the forward facing pad has broken off completely just leaving the backing plate. There was an accumulation of baked dust on the top edge of the backing plate, methinks something to do with the squeaking.
Dunno where the missing pad part is, probably ground into dust...... Maybe that's where the smell of hot brake dust that I reported after changing the pads on the front came from (see thread "Brake pad change botched?").
I guess that puts the car off the road until the Ford parts dept opens again on Monday. Poo. Is this a common failure? The current pads weren't Ford ones.
