Gears dont select/engines starts sometimes

Neighbour has just bought a 2002 Smart car he saw going very cheaply on ebay.

He emailed me to say: The smart was sold cheaply on ebay ........ because the automatic gears don?t select and it then stopped starting up. It was suggested that it is an electrical fault and it did start and move while I was collecting it . I have managed to start the engine a few times.

I know this information is not much to go on, but we are wondering if anyone with experience of these cars might have some idea about whats involved here and whether a 'mobil-mechanic' is the best way to go, or tow it around to the main dealer; which is obviously the expensive option.

It sounds as though it has the classic smart car fault with three lines showing on the instrument panel, this means it doesn't know what gear it is in and hence will not allow it to start. Disconnecting the battery for an hour or so may reset the fault. Check the battery is good and being charged. The fault may be the clutch actuator unit or the gear selector solenoid. An independent specialist would be the best bet.

Plenty of hits for this on google.

Putting it back on eBay will probably save him a huge world of grief. ;-)
