Golf wheel bearings

My bird's Golf got an advisory for play in the rear wheel bearings on both sides. Knowing VWs, this is going to be a stub axle arrangement, with the bearing pressed into the brake drum, and the whole thing adjusted by tightening or loosening a BFO nut, and secured with a castellated nut and a split pin...

Now, this may be a stupid question - do I just nip it up a bit or should I be looking to replace the bearings? At the moment they aren't making noise.

Depends on whether or not you just want it to pass or you actually want to fix it.

You can guarantee that if you go the pass route, they'll fail smack in the middle of winter where you'll end up freezing your nuts off as you change them instead of doing it in nice warm weather.

As I learned the cold and hard way.

Doki my advice would be to fix it as there not too expensive from a quick look at GSF\eurocarparts, not too much involved in doing it form memory. I'd get it done while the weather is tolerable or at least not chucking down :)

Down south we had a cracking day yesterday but a miserable day here today I wanted to sort a few things this weekend but looks miserable.

Rear ones are an absolute piece of piss to do. It's the fronts that are a bit of a bugger.

Fine by me. I've got a shed and a big heater...

They did pass - just came as an advisory.

I've generally just adjusted them, and they've been fine. I've only ever had to replace one.

That's true, or at least with drum brakes.
