Jack up wheel. Make sure handbrake is off. Grab at top and bottom and rock the wheel. Any play is a fail.

Assuming they're taper bearings, pop the dust cover off, remove split pin and nip up the nut but not overtighten it. Refit wheel and check for play.

Thanks Conor

I'm used to the Fords 15 ftlb , half a turn back and finger tighten but never done a VW. Anyway one side the nut was loose so tightened it with pliers and seems ok now. Plenty of grease just before putting it in probably helps.cheers
