Nissan Serena 1.6 Petrol 1997
Car failed on imbalance breaks (rear) 36% difference between left and right (right being the lower one).
How can I fix this? new break shoes?
Martin
PS - I'm in Belfast so its a Government test centre.

Thanks all
Going to have a look at the drums tonight - had to order the break shoes so they are in stock around 4pm this afternoon in the local motorfactors.
Thanks again all

The chances of it being only the brake shoes are IMHO remote - it's far more likely to be a problem with a wheel cylinder either leaking or seized. If it's seized, the original shoes might well be ok. If it's leaking they're best replaced.
Probably the self adjusters for the rear brake shoes has seized.
Does nobody remeber they have self adjusters that get bunged up with crud?
Conor mumbled:
Are there any designs of self adjuster that /don't/ get bunged up with crap?
They don't on the SD1 because they're at the top of the top shoe. Doesn't mean they work, though. I've got another new set waiting to be fitted. Bet they don't work either.
You would think so but it did when my escort failed its MOT on exactly the same thing, I unsiezed the rusty/cruddy adjuster and hey presto, brake balance ok. You would think it would just push the unadjusted shoe out first though......

Well, it's the brakes that are broken.
Hi Dave
"No" is much shorter and is also a sentence. 8~)
Wrong. My Capri failed for imbalance on the rear brake.
Conor mumbled:
As far as I know, they test for balance on the rear /service/ brake, but not on the rear parking brake.
Sorry, my misunderstanding. It failed on the service brake. Parking brake was fine.
