Someone had to say it!

If it's anything like the Passat, the switch is prone to eventual failure. Ours became intermittent, sometimes being reluctant to operate the starter, then gave up entirely. It's a plastic switch down at the end of the key barrel. About 17 quid for a VW dealer. Had to remove the airbag, steering wheel, column shrouds, indicator switches, etc., to replace it. All because they put one of the fixing screws in a stupid bloody place.

VW's of this era all used the same igntion switch unit, and they are very prone to failure. Usually you loose one or both of the auxilary feeds even though the starter and igntion will still operate.

The actual switch unit is a snap-into-place plastic unit at the back of the igntion barrel and is about 30quid and 20mins to change.

If you have a non standard stereo which draws more power than the factory unit this shortens their life, as for some bizare reason VW decided not to use any relays to switch the auxilaries..
