Indicator problem

I have a P reg Vauxhall Asta and tonight the offside front indicator, repeater light, and tail indicator lamp are all light up with the engine and all other lights switched off. Went and sat inside the car and can hear what sounds like a crackling sound coming from behind the dashboard somewhere.

Only way i could get the lights to go off was to put on the hazard lights then off again and the indicator lights, along with the crackling stopped. After about thirty seconds or so crackling sound could be heard again but the indicator lights stayed off, at this stage i have now dis-connected the battery and left it.

Does anyone know what it could be, as with cars these days a guess it could be a million and one things, more trouble than there worth cars.

could possibly be a dodgy hazard light switch, flick it on & off a few times or the flasher relay playing up, check the relays in the fuse box.

Bought a new hazard light switch yesterday, everything seems to be ok.
