Insurance excesses

Prompted to ask this following Tim's post and because insurance renewal is due soon...

Is it now normal behavior for insurance companies in general to have separate excesses for different categories of damage when they happen simultaneously? Or is it a cost cutting exercise by some companies in order to quote lower premiums to look more attractive when comparing prices?

Re-reading our current policy and schedule, it definitely does *not* mention anything about separate excesses for glass and bodywork (except windscreen which is clearly and specifically listed as separate). Can't see anything about a separate excess for audio claims either - although there is a maximum limit for claims for such.

Just want to make sure that I'm comparing the same levels of cover when comparing prices :)
