Intermittent Shreak/Creak - Ford Focus Clutch

Hi all

As the title, the car is a Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi, around 60,000 miles.

Occasionally when the clutch is let out there's a nasty sound somewhere between a shreak and a creak. Clutch seems to operate OK apart from this. Maybe happens once or twice in 4 miles of suburban driving.

Anyone any ideas on the cause?

Thanks

Phil

Loose engine mounts can cause upleasant noises on clutch take up, as can exhaust components, and sometimes even ball joints. If it is the clutch then sometimes it can be the clutch plate cushioning assembly squeaking, but more likely on that particular vehicle it is the dual mass flywheel starting to show its age.

Thanks Mr Cheerful

Does the flywheel eventually fail? If so, how do I establish when best to repair this (other than wait till it falls apart of course)? Will the noise become more regular on clutch operation before it finally dies?

If it is the dmf then it will get noisier and noisier, you may also find it stalls more easily and unpredictably. They can go on for a long time, but it is the length of a bit of string how long :) Sudden catastrophic complete failure is not common.
