KA Issues

Just bought a 1996 KA for my daughter to learn to drive in - its in good nick for year with full MOT. However not impressed with brakes and another issue is the infamous engine running on after changing down etc. Its got a full Ford service history and I noticed that they replaced the idle speed control valve at 67000 miles - 20 000 miles ago. Not sure whether or not its that or the throttle position sensor issue which I know was a problem on early KA's and which there is a fix for .... I want to sort things out myself & save the high Ford labour charges which looking at the past paper work have been a rip off ( 40 quid for changing a fan belt ) and what I cannot understand if these items are known to be dodgy why aren't they servicible items ? Or at least checked at interim services ? After all they represent a serious safety issue ..... especially as these cars are the first choice of many first time women drivers - low insurance/easy to drive etc. At he moment the car drives itself without foot on throttle !!

Could someone please advise as to the procedure for sorting the TPS as I understand the fix is a shorter wiring loom or sometin .... ? How much is the part ? I guess I might get away with a good clean up of the idle control valve.

scoll down and check the thread "ka engine over revving" this is a known concern

Fit vented disks and calipers from a Fiesta or a later Ka.

You can do that in a Ka when the ISV and TPS are working properly, and revs don't die particularly quickly on these cars. Is it definately reving up?

The new TPS uses a different loom. No idea on prices.

Still getting used to things ... I guess it doesn't really rev up when changing down just the revs are slow to die as you say . The idle speed seems very fast and am not sure whether that is normal or not? Guess there is no way of adjusting that as its it controlled by engine management system ...

There's no rev counter, so it's difficult to tell without plugging it into a diagnosics box or wiring up a tacho. It'll idle high whilst it's cold, but if the ISV's playing up, IME it's pretty obvious. There's very little engine braking on these cars as the revs die so slowly.

I had the same concerns when I bought my Ka - seemingly high idle speed and hanging on to higher revs for 2 or 3 seconds when lifting off the throttle. Main dealer told me this was correct, to prevent stalling. He ran a tacho test to show me idle speed was within limits of 850-900 rpm. After 2 years, I've now got quite used to it.

Will it lock the wheels? Many modern cars have what feel like over-assisted brakes. With the Ka one has to move the pedal more to activate the brakes. It's not a fault if it'll lock the wheels...

The idle control valve usually responds to being cleaned and providing the seal isn't ruined it'll work a treat. The throttle position sensor is more awkward. Anecodatal evidence suggests that infrequent oil changes clogs up the ICV (oil oil fumes get in it, it would seem) and the TPS just fails from time to time.

We had a very unusual sensor failure, the TMAP, which felt a little bit like the ICV.

Only £40? Shoot. Moved from Ford to Honda. Fanbelt changes are a good deal more than £40.

Because they'll go on for tens of thousands of miles then suddenly misbehave. It's a bit like why a teenager suddenly whines. One can't tell when it'll happen... :)

Hmm. Serious safety issue? No. If the car drives on by itself that's no problem if the clutch and brakes work...

It can be. Water ingress was a problem on earlier Kas but most should have been sorted by now - or sold on with a fault the previous keeper couldn't be bothered cleaning.

I can't answer the part cost problem at the moment nor can I access

from this machine to see if anybody there can help... but it won't be all that expensive.

Thanks for reply dervman - as you can see I'm a bit green on the KA ..... love the drive tho as it reminds me of my first motor - a first generation mini . Ah what I did to ( & in ) that ;-) Had a temp guage tho which I miss ! Looking under the bonnet the engine compartment looks familiar unlike my other motor a vvti Avensis. Been spoit with brakes etc.

Cheers
