L-o-t-u-s again - will I never learn?

Hi All,

Well, my heart has triumphed over my head once again and I've bought a Lotus Elise.

IMO the '02 model' looks very pretty in Ardent Red.

Well, the battery warning light came on before I got it home!

Despite charging the battery overnight it let me down on the 2nd day. Luckily I had stopped for fuel where the discount place I get my batteries is around the back.

But health & safety rules dictated that the technician couldn't fit the battery while at the pumps, although I didn't mind as he helped me push the car the short distance to where it was ok.

So, the new battery has allowed me to play with my new toy for another day, but I must sort it.

So, my questions are:-

1) Do I have to remove the undertray to fit a new alternator drive belt (which I've bought). or is it best done by removing the rear offside wheel?

How does the wheel arch liner come off?

2) Does anyone know the best source of a manual - is there a genuine Lotus service manual, or is the Haynes Enthusiast Guide any good?

Thanks.

I had an Espirt once..

What you must learn is that LOTUS stands for;

Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious

or,

Lots Of Time Underneath Servicing!..

There does exist the Lotus owners club/s which are a bit of a must if you want to do any DIY type work

Google "lotus owners club" that brigs up a few, a post of three on one of those might be very helpful...

Still the same old tradition, as Colin Chapman one said;

"If it hangs together for more than the one race then we've built it too well"

Took mine to France a few times when courting the missus, and it was very interesting when you stopped for petrol at small garages, guaranteed to have the mech's come out and want to have a good look around it!..

Haven't seen any out on the wild for yonks now;(..

I have changed an alternator on an 02 Elise before. I think we took the rear undertray and the wheel off, but from memory it only comes out one of those ways, sorry I can't remember which one, or how the wheelarch liner is attached. Google is probably your friend.

Hope it's just the belt on yours. Alternator had failed on the car I worked on and melted one of the connectors.

Lotus do a printed manual, available from any dealer

The parts list is also very useful for viewing of assemblies

If you can't afford that then there are bootleg CD's and downloads of pdf's floating around...even Google might find them using these search strings
