Laguna Jumping out of 5th gear

I doubt it will do any damage. My old Bluebird (not the current one) used to do this towards the end of its life. The problem was inside the gearbox - whatever was supposed to hold it in gear wasn't. I drove it like that (with only 4 gears) for about 20,000 miles. Perfectly OK. Would have required a new gearbox to fix, and the car was too old for it to be worth it. In the case of that car, it had been used to tow a caravan in its youth; has your friend's Laguna been used for towing?

He only bought the car 3-4 weeks ago, has 3 months warranty for up to £500 cover. It doesn't have a towball and is an ex-company car. It has done about 60-70k miles I think. It seems to have been Renault serviced all its life and it seemed a great buy for £3000. I'm going to see the guy who sold it to him on Saturday with him for backup so he has a witness to anything he says, don't want him wriggling out of this!

Would like to know what could be the cause of the problem if anyone can shed any further light...

It could be the selector or the gearbox; probably the gearbox. If it is under warranty, I think he's entitled to a new gearbox.

It can be a faulty gear lever mechanism, or engine mountings allowing too much movement, but the usual reason on an indirect gear is wear in the layshaft bearings. Could also be wear in a thrust washer on the main shaft.

I agree, sounds like the garage might be better at sales than aftersales service, but we'll see on saturday.

When it jumps out of gear, does the gearlever move out of position i.e slip from 5th back to neutral? Or does the lever stay in position when the car jumps out of gear? If it's the latter I would expect an expensive to rectify internal gearbox problem. But if it's the former then the linkage between the gearlever and box could well be the problem. Could be a split rubber bush in the linkage or the linkage may need adjusting. According to my renault manual, the first thing to check when a car slips out of gear is the engine and gearbox mounts, then the linkage, then the box itself.

BTW my renault 19 has been slipping out of 5th for years now. I just never got around to having it fixed and have learned to live with it. It only slips out when I suddenly lift off the throttle. Never when accelerating or under steady throttle.

They apparently found a gear which had burrs on it. They have filed them off and it now seems to be fine...

I'm trying to comprehend a place where it would be economical to remove & strip a gearbox & then file the burrs off a gear? & a burred gear would be noisy but jumping out of gears either the syncros or the gear shift detent.

Wonder where the burrs came from, given the gears are constant mesh? Burrs on the synchro hub or ring, I suppose, might cause it to jump out of gear, but those could simply be replaced. Burrs on the synchro teeth on the gear itself would render it scrap IMHO.

All this is rather worrying, sounds like you are both (Dave & Duncan) implying they could be doing a bodge job. It wouldn't surprise me, I always thought it was quite cheap (T Plate RXE 1.8 16v for £3k) Trouble is, we don't have any knowledge of gearboxes to say what is bullsh*t etc... Any knowledge/guidance on this would be really appreciated by my mate, i'm sure.

I think he has about 2 months warranty left. Based on what you have heard, would you expect the "jumping out of gear" to reappear? Apparently it is OK at the moment, but he only picked it up on Saturday...

Maybe I should get my mate to post direct, would be easier.

I don't think they did a bodge job, I suspect the description bears no resemblance to the fault. If it gear shifts easily & doesn't jump out of gear under max torque then most likely the gear shift just needed realigning.
