As you have found out- the perceived quality of VW, certainly the Golf 5, is alot higher than the reality! Hopefully you won;t have the infamous PVA-glue/cardboard-induced gearbox failure though..

Actually a 5 wire Wide Band Zirconia. The AZD engine isn't listed in the Bosch catalogue but is in the NTK

Mk5 = Mk4 . they still have the disolving gearbox issues though!

Update: He managed to do it. Was a stright swap. Only hard part was undoing it which was done up tight. There was some anti seize on the new part on the thready bit so I guess if it dies again it shall be easy to remove yer right. And he reset the blasted engine management light and it hasn't come back on. So job well done and saved some money from the garage.

I have the same problem on my mk4 golf running in Gambia, West Africa. I heard that if you disconnect it and soak the metal part in cola it corrodes the carbon and can be used for an additional 2 years.

I can only do this because it will take a long time for me to get the part from England.

With the damaged Lambda sensor the car leaves a great big cloud of white smoke as you drive off and drinks lots of petrol. It also had to be rewired after an incredibly stupid mechanic decided to snip the wire when he was fixing my exhaust system which had a hole just for some extra space. No other tools required other than a spanner which isn't really necessary as long as you're strong enough.

Most of which when they encounter a properly stuck tight sensor need a jubilee clip round them to stop them springing open. Tighten the jub clip on the socket before fitting so it's formed to shape. Remove jub clip from socket, slide jub clip over connector and down the wire. Fit socket into jub clip, then over the sensor hex and and re-tighten the jub clip.

I've got one that's in so tight it's broke a 3/8 drive extension. Did have a 3/8-1/2" adapter and a 1/2" breaker bar on it, something had to give. Not in a location that can be spannered in the car as it's on turbo elbow and in a space between head, firewall, manifold and ABS. Is genuine and still working so cutting the wire isn't preferred. The turbo is dead and engine is now out. It's resisted a 5 ft scaffold pole on a

1/2 T bar, even with the jubilee clip the socket just expanded and jumped over the hex. It's resisted the big adjustable being hit with a 2 lb hammer. There again generic 3 wire zirconia 1V on/off are under £10. But I really need it loose so that when the turbo goes back in the sensor can be replaced on the car without removing the engine and getting a grinder on it.

When you're getting the dead one out you can cut the wire off. (Not =

helpfull if you're trying to reuse it but most people aren't)
