Maybe, Aidy had the same recollection as me though. I think the couple of years might have been wrong, when I was thinking about it after I posted it wasn't that long after the variable speed limts were brought into place on the M25, so might be more like 10 years.

Yes. With the yellow ones the money goes to the camera partnership. With the others, to the Treasury.

The only thing wrong with the M42 system is that it wasn't taken all the way back to the M5, so you now get serious delays between there and the M40 junction, rather than between there and the M6.
But it is still *significantly* faster at peak times IME to get from the M5 to the M6 across the M42 than it used to be before the system was brought in.

This is a well known perception in supermarket check out queues too. You always notice when the queue or lane next to you goes faster, but rarely notice when you an fact are the faster, thus the perceptionis that the other queue always goes more quickly.
