Re: Temporary speed camera taxes £1m in 18 months

Motoring campaign groups have attacked a "revenue-raising" temporary

Went though the average speed cameras near J8 on M1 last Thursday. I think a lot of people down there need to get in touch with learning direct and have reading lessons. Seemed to think they can do 70mph between the cameras and then slow down at the camera.

Went though the same set up at Leicester near junctions 20/21 quite a few times and just about every person had got the hang of it straight off.

arround the M60 North yeasterday. 40 limit through roadworks. No works there, but limit in place and camera signs. At 40 we were the slowest on the motorway, by a long way. Stupid people.

It's interesting how many lorries pass you when you drive at a GPS 40 through roadworks. Especially since we are constantly told how responsible good drivers they are.

Those of us living round Nottingham learned this a long time ago.

Its amazing how many cars you pass driving at spot on 50 on the speedo in a lorry.

Lorry tachographs have to be calibrated. Your GPS just has to be "close enough". Anyway, if we get caught, we've always the tacho disc as a defence.

It's not a problem. You just make sure you keep accurately to the speed limit on the ring road. And the motorway link roads.

We had red light cameras long before speed cameras. Our speed cameras are, in the main, well signed (though there are lots of signs where there are no cameras), and painted bright yellow, usually reflective. As you say, there's no excuse.

People still get caught by them though, for all the reasons discussed above.

Then there must be a camera. I don't know that section, but the bit of the A14 I do know (near Peterborough) is littered with cameras.

Just like ones ringing Nottingham. Just like the ones that used to be on M1 at roadworks near J20/21. Just like the ones in roadworks on M42 near Tamworth. Now at roadworks M1 J8 - working with 4 camera locations so they monitor 3 stretches of the roadworks and can get you

3 times.

LOOK UP!! They are small yellow cameras that look like CCTV but have a infra red lamp each side of the camera, mounted on a nice blue overhead gantry. The camera signs are different to normal they have the magic words "AVERAGE SPEED" on them.

Slowing down at the average speed camera won't save you. You have to obey the limit, as the hard shoulder is in use there is no where to pull off and stop until your average speed is correct. And stopping on the hard shoulder is illegal anyway. If you know how far apart the cameras are (they are not at set distances like paint blobs, it's not Vascar) you can take the piss by doing 60mph for half the distance and then doing 20mph for the other half but don't be surprised when a truck rams you off the road while you are doing 20mph.

but some of those buggers are 30 and osme are 40 and the signs are nearly as good as they should be, especially in the dark :( not that i've been caught though becaus i drive there like an old fart at 25 :)

The GPS, by design, will on average, over a minute or so, be pretty much dead on. It's computing the speed from difference in position over time, and if it's got the distances right, then it can't on average get the speed wrong.

For steady speeds, it's going to be pretty much right.
