MG/Rover 'RAVE' technical files

Anyone interested in getting hold of a copy of MG/Rover technical files can find them at: http://193.130.80.7/Rover/ It's a hefty download taking over three hours at Broadband speed but the files contain workshop manuals for the entire MG/Rover range (as at 2001) including maintenance/repair procedures, technical bulletins, accessory fitting instructions, etc. The files can only be opened using the Acrobat 4 prog included. This includes a 'time-expired' plug-in which prevents the files being opened unless you reset the date on your pc to 2001. If you download the files and then burn them onto a CD-R they are there for any maintainance task you require and you can just print-off the required page(s).

You're welcome! Puzzled about the download times, however, I've only just gone onto Broadband (with Freeserve). Holding the curser over the connection icon shows speed at 576.0 kbps - this is about right isn't it?

That's your modemPC speed.

Your ModemFreeserve speed will be 512kbit/sec download, _but_

256kbit/sec upload.

Therefore if you took 3 hours to upload it, someone will only take 1.5 hours to download it. This is assuming that your upload speed is also the speed that the data's being written to at the other end.

FWIW, I've just had ADSL installed (not working now, long story), but I'm sure the modem was showing 288kbit/sec upload speed, right up until the point that the Magic Smoke(tm) came out.

Pete - I didn't upload these files - I was directed to the files myself by someone else. It took me over three hours to download the files!

Sorry, I thought you'd uploaded them!

OK, in that case - it's Freeserve's fault. Their damn transparent web proxy or something :-) Try going to

If your system uses compression, you can get some odd results - I just got infinity k/sec :-)

Once my system is up & running again, I'll try downloading them myself.

Thanks for that Pete. Just tried the test and my readings were 495 - 502 kbps. Is this good or bad?

Normal :-)

You've got a 512k connection, and you're transferring at 495-502, which is pretty good.
