Odd one but why is it a fail for split CV boots on a FWD car, but not for the similar boots on RWD half-shafts? Presumably a totally failed FWD CV can bork the steering good if it lets go but is that the only reason?

AFAIK The reason is that the fwd one will let grease onto the disc, rears are usually drum, and hence not really affected by throwing grease at them.

A FWD CV that gets muck and dirt inside will fail, eventually catastrophically.

But why would that be different from a rear CV joint - just down to the extra steering angles?

It's more likely to be that a CV joint on the front is far more likely to fail if it gets grit in than a much simpler joint on the back - where you don't need the articulation.
And if you lose a driveshaft, you're stuck on 1WD. DAMHIK,IJDOK...

I had this on my last MOT refresher, if I remember rightly it can fail on a joint / inner joint or c.v gaiter, if the shaft forms part of the suspension.
More like down to the fact that on the rear if it fails you will still have steering, on the front if it fails you may not be able to avoid going to a bad place. Like the place occupied by the oncoming traffic.

If the front one seizes up, you have no steering ....
Because its connected to the wheels providing directional control and the most braking.
Like that's worth a toss on a car.
