Am considering a new 'off road' bumper for the front of my Jeep - the one I really like is narrower than the body.
Is this OK or would it illegal for use on our UK roads? Do the bumpers have to be as wide as the vehicle body? Any of you MOT-tester types about with an opinion?

A fair few people run cars without bumpers on the road (VW Caddys and MK1 Golfs in particular, along with MK1 and 2 Escorts), so I expect it's absolutely fine MOT wise to not have a bumper. There may be specific regs for bull bars and the likes.
AFAIK there isn't specific regs, but it is classed as a modification. When I had a Vitara years ago, the insurance company told me my premium would go down if I got rid of the bullbars..

The original job of a bumper was to stop damage to bodywork if you hit another car when parking or to prevent minor damage when in an accident but now-a-days bumpers are just quick cheap replaceable bolt on parts of the body work.
As far as I know there is no law about bumpers, but there is about sharp edges on the front or things that could hurt a pedestrian if hit.
Most modern cars the bumpers are integrated as body work and form a soft plastic cushion if you should hit a person.
So if you take off a bumper you will have to iron out any sharp bits and smooth it off.
I once had a MK111 Cortina GT which I took the bumper off removed all seams and rounded off all edges and fitted a 4ft x2" dia nudge bar this passed the MOT no probs.
