New insurance legislation?

Orwell's vision of the future is coming true, twenty years later than he suggested.

So is it significantly cheaper to insure for 6 months? I suspect not. What if it's stolen during the other 6? Just foolish IMO.

With that one however you do have a valid point. I wonder if the insurers will come up with something flexible for that ?

I disagree.

It'll only make it harder for the law abiding.

The toerags will just clone more plates.

Look for a car like yours, with a tax disc, clone the plates and you're away. You can drive round on their tax disc and insurance, and because there aren't any police around, the chances of you being stopped are probably less than now!

Which is a loophole that sorely needs stopping up. What happens if it's badly parked and causes an accident, or the handbrake fails and it rolls into a bus-queue etc. etc. etc.

Quite right too.

It was never really practical to do that anyway. It would virtually always involve diving a car un-insured at some point. If you want to keep two cars on the road for a bit, then get insurance on them both. I've done it loads of times even though I've always kept the for-sale car off the road. Some insurance companies give you a month or so to sell the old car, others charge a smallish fee. All the ones I've dealt with recognize it as a need of their customers and have arrangements to handle it.

Colin.

How? You already have to SORN a car that's off the road.

They've always been able to do that. I'll bet most people who currently "forget" to buy insurance won't want to do anything as obviously illegal as cloning plates.

Cheers,

Colin.

Doesn't stop people from cancelling a policy though. What they need is some sort of system where they link policy numbers to tax discs, and if a policy is cancelled, and no new policy is taken out within a week, they check things out.

If it meant that they're a lot less likely to get caught, they may well do.

That's because we don't know all the fact yet!

No, it has to be taxed wherever it's kept, unless you complete a SORN, and even then it has to be off a public highway. If it's *on* the road, it also have to be MOT'd and insured whether you use it or not.

Wrong, it has to be off the public highway to be uninsured legally.

That is correct. That has always been that way, and has never changed. Any vehicle on the public highway has to be insured.

Suppose you park your car on the road-side, but unused, and somebody hits it. It might be possible that their insurer, or the Police, decide that your parking was poor and might have contributed to the incident, and could claim off you. If your not insured you're not only causing an offence, but could be liable for any damage and injuries caused.

Yes, as without tax and insurance you'd need to SORN it. If you are selling the car most insurers will allow a small grace of cover on the outgoing car - I changed cars last year, and the AA allowed up to 7 days of temporary cover on the old car. It would still have to have MOT and Tax to be road tested though.

In some cases you may have to pay a charge to cover the two cars at the same time.
