new tyre problem

I had new tyres fitted 3 about months ago. Three of the tyres hold air, but I recently discovered that a rear tyre went down to 8 psi. I pumped it up again, but the tyre only looses air at an extremely slow rate, indicating that the problem started just after the tyre fitting. Is it possible that it could caused by faulty fitting?

If it's not punctured, more likely a poor seal at the rim caused by rust or corrosion.

Generally, not. It may be a dodgy valve, but it's more likely just coincidence. If it did start then, it's likely down to crappy rims, which isn't the tyre shop's fault.

Why not take it back to the tyre shop and ask 'em for advice - it's what they're good at.

usually rim - needs tyre to be removed, rim cleaned with a wire brush, all bits blown away and refitted and - usually - all is well.

Thanks for all replies. Wheels are alloys in VGC, but I'll have it looked at tomorrow.

However, if corrosion of the rims is the cause, simple cleaning (like wire brushing) will only effect a temporary cure. Because the bare metal will corrode like the clappers. The rim - either steel or alloy, needs to be repainted.

You are more likely to have leaking rims with alloys than steel wheels.

Take the wheel off the car and put it on a flat surface. Put some water on the rim and watch for the bubbles (check all the way round on both sides).

Add small amount of washing up liquid to the water so bubbles tend to be more visible especially with a small leak :-)

Not where I go. I'm lucky if they listen or say five words, including the size I want, let alone give me any sort of advice. On the bright side, they're bloody cheap, there's no waiting, and the tyres aren't bad, but customer service isn't their strong point.

You pays your money, you takes your choice.

I used to use General Tyres in Hounslow and they were excellent.

I now need a set of 205/60R15s for my Audi. Expensive blighters.

Tyree fitting, faulty valve, or a slow puncture.

Take it back - the tyre depot will pump it up, drop it into a bath of water, and see where the bubbles come from. Just like what you'd with a bike inner tube, but on a larger scale.

You could of course have a good look at the tyre yourself and see if there's a nail or somesuch stuck in it.
