Noise at 3500rpm

Hi

I recently started hearing quite a loud noise when accelerating, starting at about 3500rpm. OK, I thought, the exhaust has been patched up a couple of times, let's get it replaced. I got the whole exhaust system replaced yesterday, but I'm still getting the noise (I'm not sure if it's quite as loud as before). I haven't had a chance to get it checked out yet. This is on a 98 Astra mk4. Any ideas?

What sort of noise and where from - exhaust blowing, rattler, gear lever buzzing, loose change in glovebox vibrating?

If exhaust suspected, take it back

Catalytic converter breaking up?

Thanks for the replies. The sound is like (remember I am far from a car expert) a small hole in the exhaust, but obviously there isn't. I had everything, including the cat replaced. I'll get the car checked over on Monday.

I have frequently had to weld up new cheap exhausts, they must employ monkeys to make them.

genuine Vauxhall exhausts are quite cheap and work straight out of the box.

Not sure what you call cheap, but I paid £370 for the complete system. Bosal is the make, I think.

It might be a cracked manifold.

Doesn't sound to bad to me especially if you did get the cat replaced in that price.

bosal is a relatively good make, but you could have got genuine for that price.

I can't remember the exact details, but there was a thread a while ago re someone with exactly the same problem, and it turned out to be some sort of valve or bypass on the exhaust that needed cleaning out or had jammed or somesuch.

Thanks again, folks. Sounds like there are several possible causes. I'll get the garage to have anoither look on Monday.
