Fuel pump pressurising fuel system. Stops after asecond or so because the fuel system reaches it's operating pressure. Can't hear it when the engine is running because of the noise of the engine.

Nothing to worry about.

Electric petrol pump ?

It's the electric fuel pump priming the fuel system. I used to have a V6 Ghia-X and it also made the noise you described - lasts about 1-2 secs tops.

Bear in mind that if you haven't noticed this before that it may be presaging the failure of the pump. My Sierra one got noisy before failure.

So what do you have now, Neil?

I'm still driving my trusty old 2.0 Ghia X, but am thinking of something mad, like a Scorpio Ultima 2.9... !

I bought a new Fiat Stilo Abarth in September 2002. Compared to previous cars, I didn't have the V6 Ghia-X that long - about 18 months. I can only describe it as feeling 'old before its time', even though it was only 4 yrs old when I sold it, with 56,000 miles on and I was concerned about a few potentially big bills - the clutch being one, as I had the distinct impression that the clutch was on its way out with a possible hydraulic fault. Also, I made it to the Fiat dealer with the rear section of the exhaust held together with gaffer tape/wire/exhaust gum. No way was I forking out over 200 quid for a complete new exhaust when I was selling the car !

I bought the Abarth due to its specification - superb Sat Nav, semi-auto gearbox and lots of other toys. The car is let down simply by an appalling dealer network who seem to know incredibly little about the car and don't seem to have learnt much in the year I've had the car, either.

At 11,000 miles I had a complete new engine fitted, due to a head gasket failure - something I warned them about my suspicions due to gunk in the radiator header tank a few thousand miles before, but they "didn't believe it to be a problem". *Sigh*

Apart from that, I'm generally happy with the car - does all I want it to, I just wish there was a local Fiat dealer who wasn't incompetent :-(
