Many years ago, I had a tour of Ford's Dagenham site. Finished engines were run up very briefly before installation by connecting up a supply of town gas and air directly to the inlet manifold.

As I was being conducted through the section, the crankshaft of the one under test broke, leading to a spectacular exit of pistons, con rods and other assorted bits through the sump.

A big cheer went up from the workers, then they carried on.

It didn't seem that unusual an event...
