Picked up the Aerodeck today

For those three people who may be interested...

Drives nice for a car that's 17 years old and has done 147k. No rattles, hardly any squeaks. Rather quiet at speed as well. Front wheels need balancing as they transmit a bit of vibration at 'Shorry occifer' speeds, but I'll probably try to find a set of Honda alloys off a Prelude of similar vintage anyway.

I think the carbs are out of balance as the engine loses speed rather slowly when I take the foot off the loud pedal and they're doing the 'closing slowly' bit. It also idles rather low (rough guess, around

600-650) with the lights on and consequently a tad rough. Problem most goes away if you turn out the lights but that doesn't help at night.

Also wants an oil & filters change and probably a good service but that seems to be pretty much it.

And the fuel gauge is either lying or it really didn't use a lot of petrol on 140 miles of motorway driving.

I'd get the ones off an Aerodeck TBH, in their day they could out handle most other cars - including the Prelude (that was tested by Honda on their track).

I'm just trying to remember the faults on these. The Aerodeck had a single carb on it, so didn't suffer with the same problems as the Prelude.

Check if there is a little blue/green valve in the vacuum tubes - should route to the throttle damper. If these leak they do hold the throttle open too long. Otherwise check for air leaks, and linkages sticking.

No, these were very economical cars - well in excess of 40mpg is expected.

Aren't they pretty much the same? I mainly mentioned the Prelude ones because I think they're easier to find...

Hmm. I guess I better start counting carbs then...

I'll check. May well be a linkage issue, it feels like the throttle cable's a tad slack as well.

Ah, bonus. I knew they were supposed to be good on fuel but that's really good.

That's interesting, I am trying to decide if I should keep my D reg Accord ( 120k ) or send it off to car heaven. The bloody thing just wont die. Last year/ the year before I put a new exhaust, some recon front calipers and a battery in it, I think the rot may well be an issue again this year but that can be dealt with ( I have a couple of friendly welders local to me !) ,Is it worth putting it in for another test do you think ? Mine is a fuel injection one, still runs / starts fine, I don't get quite 40mpg but it's not too bad, quite nippy off the line too. I keep it more or less as a spare car, I could not stand parting with it last year!

Could be, just check the offsets though.

Aye, IIRC these were a twin pot carb, usual low throttle, full throttle kind of setup.

Just check the correct settings, these are supposed to have a certain amount of slack in them.

I had loads of customers reporting around 42mpg most of the time.
