Pinto on the bench .. and Q's ..

Hi All,

So, the trusty Sierra Est is now an empty shell waiting to go off to that big car park in the sky. While it was up on my mates two poster I was looking down it's flanks and considering it's 22 years old and has been parked in the road for every one of them it's pretty flat. Apparently (according to my mate) itr's because it's made of 'metal' rather than the tin of today's lighter (and more fuel efficient) machines?

Anyway. I've got the 2L lump on the bench and have just decided to do the cheap things while-I'm-there before I put it in the kit car. The idea is just to get it in and see how it all goes, then later maybe do a 'proper' rebuild?

Things I have done so far ..

Removed and checked the clutch. The radial springs are all tight and although worn, I reckon there is another 20k in the friction plate (probably 4 years in the kit car). I might see if I can just get a friction plate? The flywheel and pressure plate are both ok (I had no problem with the clutch when it was in the Sierra, even when towing). I've ltaken the flywheel off as I'm told it makes fitting the new sump gasket easier. A new clutch kit would be ~ 50 quid?

Romoved / cleaned the cam spray bar. I also cleaned the 'mud' out of all the holes on the top of the head / cam gallery. The cam *is* worn (it's done 97k) but it didn't sound 'cammy'? A cam kit around 75 quid?

I 'tested' the large core plug in the rear of the block and put a small screwdriver through it! I changed all 4 core plugs. (4 quid)

Things I could / need to do ,,

I should have a new oil pump on it's way (eBay) so will change that and fit it with the newly painted Cortina sump (to fit the kit car), scavenge pipe and hex drive thingy.

I think I have the 'narrow lip' rocker cover and all the screws were finger tight (with a socket) when I took it off. There was some slight leakage but is that to be expected with cork after maybe 10 years? Should I find a wide flange rocker cover (with the bird wing type long washers) or just rtv the old cover (new gasket) back on?

The prop on the Sierra was split with a rubber cush drive against the box, u/j in the middle and by the diff. I need to make a single piece prop that goes from the Sierra 5sp box to the MKII Escort axle. Now I have the prop from the 1300 Kent (currently running in the kit car) and I believe I can get a 'weldable yoke' to go in the front end of the prop tube but what nose piece would fit the 5sp box and provide a u/j yoke please (or a whole u/j and nose piece?) Transit maybe?

All the best ..

You can get them for less, but a decent one is normally around £75. Personally I'd recommend Burtons' "Towing" cam for a Pinto. Loads more bottom end torque, and they still rev well. No lose situation.

Use the same cover, but don't overtighten it. 4 or 5 lb ft is enough, any more and they leak like an Alfasud floorpan.

Mk2 RS2000 Escort prop is ideal. The 1.3 props are a bit weak. Alternatively, and if you can find one, the old Anglias had a prop that could withstand a limited nuclear explosion.

Ok Pete, thanks for that.

Ok ;-)

I should imagine rare or expensive though Pete? Did the RS2000 have the 5sp box and therefore the same output spline shaft fit ?

The 1.3 props are a bit weak.

Ok .

Time to ring round some prop specialists methinks?

Ford, in their infinate, glorious, beautiful, money saving wisdom, used to make virtually all their props interchangeable. The RS2000 prop will go straight into a Sierra 5 speed, as will the Anglia one, or a Capri one, or a Granada one (but then you're back with the rubber doughnut)...

They'll all bolt onto the Sierra diff as well IIRC.

Urban legend says that a Hyundai Stellar props also fit, but I've never tried one.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember T i m saying something like:

Depends where you are... but Recoprop in Luton are utterly excellent and not too expensive. They'll do mail order too, but it really pays to pop in and see them with the bits in hand.

Blessem ;-)

used to

Just with the Granny or all the above (except the RS and Anglebox I assume?)

Hmm, I believe there are a couple of flange sizes used on the MKII Escort diff .. (as per my Ranger) .. You *can* change them but there's summat about a collapsable spacer n preload in the diff and it all sounds a bit messy playing in there ..

I've taken the Sierra nose piece off the prop so the local prop man can take a look to see if he can find a suitable match with a std u/j.

I might take it to Luton Monday though .. ;-)

All the best ..
