It could be the connector pins on the boot, try cleaning them & making sure the do connect

Given that's it's both the boot release and the rear wiper, as A C says it's almost certainly the rear earthing connector funkiness. Give it a clean with a lint-free cloth and then apply some electrical conductor funkiness stuff.

When was the car last serviced? Ordinarily the servicing garage should electrical-grease up the connector...

I doubt the average garage would bother doing such a thing. Main agents might, but not many people use those for an older Ka, for example.
