Still illegal. There was a motorist in one of the TV patrol progs that got a spot fine of £30 recently for having foglights on unnecessarily, but I know what you mean. A sympathetic copper might agree with you. :-) Mike.

On all the Mk3 Cortinas I've had the sidelights are still on when you take the ignition key out (but with the headlights switched on). On Alfas / Fiats the lights go out when you take the key out (with the lights switched on) - unless you turn the key to the parking light position.

I'm a pedant and proud of it. Someone has to stand up to the Americanisation of the English language. Things that reflect do so in only one direction. Just like reversing back. Aaaaargh!

OK, I see. That is indeed mostly how motorcycles are.

Wasn't it because of the 'smogs' we used to have that hastened the introduction of city clean air acts? They were filthy. Half an hour in one of those, and your clothes would be dripping with inky looking water. As far as visibility went, I recall bus conductors walking in front of their buses to guide the drivers, and cars following me and my mates on our bikes. We took perverse pleasure in leading them off the main roads down some side street. I'm sure they were cursing us once they realised. Mike.

Not on any of the Fiats I've ever owned. Even my old 131s had the same set up where you have to turn the key to a special position to keep the sidelights on when the engine is off.

Alfetta and Sud based cars have a 'conventional' setup, as did my 124 Spider.

The only thing I can remember about 'Sud switches was that on one I drove the heater fan speed was on either the indicator or wiper stalk...

Saabs have done that since the 60's. handy - in these dark days I just leave the switch permanently 'on'

Here here! This reminded me of the other day when they announced on the local radio news that an "ex-murderer" had escaped from the local open prison. I'm still trying to work out what an "ex-murderer" is. Any suggestions?
