Puff of steam from grill - Merc E220 Cdi 1999(V)

Every now and then I see some steam (not a lot) come from the grill when stationary. Although it happens after driving for a while, the temperature gauge has always been okay, (around about the half way mark).

Any ideas?

Thanking you in advance

might be a tiny core leak or if there is a cap a leaking gasket or even a leaking seam or hose connection, or (bizarrely enough) an engine leak that sprays forward (I have seen this twice over the years !) keep an eye on the water levels, a neighbour of mine had a granada that leaked about a cup of water every month or so, enough to see on the ground, he used that car for about eight years with that leak, which never got worse! Yours might be the same or it might suddenly let go in a big way on a motorway, you must judge the situation for yourself.

its not just in thr rain is it i.e water getting on to the cores and steaming off.

Does it do it when the road are dry? My car does this, but it's just water steaming off when the roads are wet. I never notice it any other time.

If you are not losing coolant don't worry, its not unusual when your radiator warms up after running cool while the car is in motion just collected water evapourating. It can be spray from the car in front or droplets that got blown off the grille on to the radiator fins .

Just a thought in case anybody has tried it some antifreeze was mixed with a flourescent dye- so as I see it shining a UV 'black light' source should cause any leaks to show up like the proverbial sore thumb similar idea to crack testing has anybody tried it??

Derek last coolant leak I had was at 70 (honest officer) in the outer lane of the M56 when the top rad hose exploded { cause a stuck thermostat radiator cap} in a huge cloud of steam watch some old F1 footage to get an idea so I could see for about 10 secs 4 cars overtook me on the inside while I was trying to get to the hard shoulder.

Probably a tiny leak in the rad, which is damp, and when stood in traffic and core heats up it turns to steam which wafts out of the grille.

Had this on a Volvo not so long ago.

Are you loosing any coolant?
