Quick Tyre Query

Need to replace all 4 tyres on my Rover 214SEi (1995 N-reg). Handbook says to use 185/55-15 V rating.

Spoke to a tyre place who say I can put on 195/50-15s on H or V rating as these are much cheaper.

I usually use Firestones. 185/55-15 Firestones are £65.

195/50-15s are £50. Same price also applies to Yokohama, and Avon.

Advice please on whether change in size/rating is OK and also which make is recommeded. I understand Avon is the best make out of these.

Cheers Paul, Wakefield

You should shop around, the prices you are talking are well dear for both sizes!. Although changing to 195/50/15 will save you money on the price per tyre, they will wear more on the edge and give you a more uncomfortable ride. As for Avon being a good tyre against the others!, the fitted price inclusive of VAT for 195/50/15 VR can be as low as £36.41 for the ZV3, compare that to 185/55/15 Firestone F700 (82V) at £55.00 Those are genuine Fitted prices, not in your area but most tyre dealers buy at the same price. If the handbook recomends VR speed rating then you should not fit HR.
